OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
“To create an environment on Bainbridge Island in which the arts and humanities flourish.”
BIAHC IDENTIFIED:
The Bainbridge Island Arts & Humanities Council (BIAHC) strives to create an environment on Bainbridge Island in which the arts and humanities flourish.
The Council provides 1) coordination and advocacy for Bainbridge
Island’s non-profit arts and humanities organizations and 2) programs
and community education in response to the island’s cultural needs.
BIAHC
is the City of Bainbridge Island’s designated advocate and advisor for
cultural issues, and has responsibility for implementing the Cultural
Element of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. As part of this work, BIAHC
oversees the City of Bainbridge Island’s process for allocating City
funding to individuals, groups, and organizations through the Arts and Humanities Fund (for individual cultural projects), the Cultural Funding Program (for island nonprofit cultural agencies), and the 1% for Public Art Fund. BIAHC also supervises feasibility research and training related to the development of Cultural Facilities .
The Council also offers an array of programs and services. BIAHC Programs include the Bainbridge Island Arts Education Community Consortium, a comprehensive community-based program supporting arts learning in the island’s public schools; the Celluloid Bainbridge Film Festival , that celebrates all things Bainbridge through film; the Great Decision Discussion Series, a community exploration into world affairs issues.

BIAHC coordinates community events during National Poetry Month; and administers the Island Treasure Awards, two awards given each year to islanders for their outstanding contributions in the arts and humanities.
BIAHC Services includethe monthly convening of the Cultural Funding Directors’ Forum , as well as the Reps Meeting ,
a community-wide interagency discussion. BIAHC regularly collaborates
with other island organizations to broaden community cultural
opportunities. Throughout the year, BIAHC also offers numerous
topic-specific workshops, trainings, discussions, and planning meetings.
BIAHC Publications include Exhibition, a journal of visual and literary arts; Arts News, a cultural quarterly; and three monthly eNewsletters: BIAHC eNews, Opportunities for Artists, and Late Breaking News.
BIAHC Special Events include the Council’s primary fundraising event, Bainbridge in Bloom, and the Auction for the Arts, a collaborative fundraiser which supports four island arts organizations.
Relationship to the City of Bainbridge Island:
The
Bainbridge Arts and Humanities Council is the official body of the City
empowered to act on all matters pertaining to the implementation of the
goals and policies of the Cultural Element of the city’s Comprehensive
Plan.
