STUDENT ART CONTEST 2006
6th Bainbridge
Island Student Art Contest: The Winners
Bainbridge Island celebrated a successful tribute to young people’s
creativity during the 6th Annual Student Art Contest at the Pavilion
on Sunday, October 1st. Dinah Satterwhite, the founder and
manager of the Student Art Contest, reports that there were almost
200 entries this year.
For the second year in a row, the judges chose a hand-made book
for the Best of Show award. This year’s winning
art-book was created by Claire Nitsche who is in 8th grade. It
is titled “Book of Life,” and includes some small paintings,
magazine clippings, and typed prose by the artist, all creatively
arranged.
Claire won $100 in cash, a beautiful achievement certificate,
movie passes, a gift certificate to Oil and Water Art Supply, 100
colored pencils, and an ice cream party for 4 at Mora Ice Cream.
Each first place winner received $25 cash, second place winners
received $10 cash, and third place winners received $5 cash. Several
Honorable Mention certificates were also awarded, and every student
who entered the contest received bright orange merit ribbons at

STUDENT
ART CONTEST 2005

5th Annual Bainbridge Island Student
Art Contest November 6, 2005
The Bainbridge Island Arts Walk celebrated a successful tribute
to young people’s creativity at their 5th Annual Student Art
Contest at the Pavilion on Sunday, November 6th. Bainbridge Island’s
young residents and students ranging in age from Kindergarten through
High School competed for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards in seven
different grade categories. Dinah Satterwhite, the founder and manager
of the Student Art Contest, reports that there were over 240 entries
this year, including a greater variety of mediums. Many of the winning
art pieces were non-traditional mediums such as a large colorful
woven ribbon piece (1st place in Grades 7&8), a tiny detailed
bead embellishment (1st place in High School: 3-D), and a towering
8’ tall detailed pencil drawing (1st place in High School:
2-D). Other mediums included ceramics, oil pastel, markers, watercolor,
wood, oil, metal sculptures, acrylic, pastel, scratchboard, mixed
media, and photography.
“I didn’t envy the judges,” said Ms. Satterwhite.
“They were given two hours to look at each of the 240+ pieces,
and choose the top 3 winners in each grade category, plus they could
choose Honorable Mention winners at their discretion. They all completed
their task in time for the results to be tallied and the certificates
to be completed in preparation for the Award Ceremony at 5:00 pm.”
Over 350 people gathered in the Pavilion as Ms. Satterwhite announced
the winners. Each first place winner received $25 cash, second place
winners received $10 cash, third place winners received $5 cash,
and the Best of Show received $100 in cash along with a few extra
prizes including software, art supplies, and movie passes. And very
“official” award certificates were given to each winner
as their name was announced. Actually, everybody won something this
year as bright purple merit ribbons were handed out to every student
at the end of the Award Ceremony.
The Best of Show was a little surprise this year, as the winner
did not place in their own grade category as has been the case in
the four previous years. Caitlin Macgraw was the Best of Show winner
with her photo essay “No Longer a Child.” She had entered
the High School: Photography category with her book that contained
photo/collage pieces combined with heartfelt prose about the hardships
that many teenagers face. Some of Ms. Satterwhite’s volunteers
pointed out how much courage it must have taken to write the book
and collaborate some of the stories, graphic photos, and very personal
issues.
The Best of Show piece and many of the first place winners’
art is currently on display at the Kids’ Discovery Museum
next to the Pavilion on Madison Avenue on Bainbridge Island. It
will stay up until November 21st.

Ellingsen, John Adams, Barbara Kowalski, David Warren, and Cheryl
