Island poets, both established and aspiring, were invited to submit original poems on the theme "green" to the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council for display in store windows during April -- National Poetry Month. On display are works by poets Gary Anderson, Paul Anishanslin, Judith Bagley, Francine Boel, Robert Burmer, Kent Chadwick, Jennifer Coates, John Davis, Jennifer Hager, Sue Hylen, Micki Kent, Kathryn Keve, Ann Kuntz, Bob McAllister, Roger Midgett, Marcia Millican, Rachel Nova, Linda Owens, Jay Payne, Jane Pearson, Karen Perry, Hilary Pritchard, Nancy Rekow, Kristi Rudolph, Charles Sharpe, Morgan Smith, Lilach Somberg, David Stallings, Everett Thompson, Cindy Vandersluis, Diane Walker, Barbara Wolf, and Christine Wyatt.

Poets of chosen poems will read their poems at the BIAHC Poetry Corners Poetry Showcase to be held April 3, 7:00 p.m. at the Flowering Around Sunroom Café, 200 Winslow Way W.

LOCAL NATIONAL POETRY MONTH EVENTS 

April 3 - BIAHC Poetry Corners Poetry Showcase - 7:00 p.m. - Free - Flowering Around Sunroom Cafe, 200 Winslow Way W - Poems featured in Poetry Corners read by their authors.  Sponsored by BIAHC and Flowering Around.

April 11 - Poulsbohemian Armchair Poetry Readings - 7:00 p.m. - Poulsbohemian Coffee House, 19003 Front Street, Poulsbo.  Readings by David Hecker, Paul Hunter and Michael Grant.

April 14 - Third Annual Bainbridge Island Poetry Slam - 7:30 p.m.  - $5 suggested donation - Bainbridge Performing Arts, 200 Madison Avenue N -  Local poets duke it out before judges chosen from the audience.  Cash prizes, plus a free drink for all contestants. - Sign up and information:  206.842.8569 or kthorne@bainbridgeperformingarts.org.

April 18-19 - "First Class" - 7:30 p.m. - Free - Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Avenue N.  A play by University of  Washington Professor Emeritus and poet David Wagoner about his teacher and mentor, poet Theodore Roethke.

April 19 - 25th (or 26th) Annual San Carlos Poetry Reading - 1:00-3:25 p.m. - Free - San Carlos Restaurant, 279 Madison Avenue N - Emceed by the legendary Bob McAllister.

April 19 - Crab Creek Review Group Reading - 3:30 p.m. - Eagle Harbor Book Co., 157 Winslow Way E - Celebrating the new issue and its twenty-five year history.

April 26 - Poems read by their Sakai Intermediate School 5th grade authors; students of poet Nancy Rekow and 5th grade teacher Marguerite Thomas. - 2:00 p.m. - Free - Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Avenue N. Poems are on display at the library throughout the month of April.

April 28 - Reading hosted by Neil Baker celebrating Northwest poet Gary Snyder - 7:00 p.m. - Free - Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Avenue N.

April 30 - Second Annual Bainbridge Island Limerick Contest Reading - 7:30 p.m. - Eagle Harbor Book Co., 157 Winslow Way E  - Doggerel Day!  Limerick contest entries featuring Bainbridge Island place names read by their authors.
