Twenty Bainbridge Island cultural organizations, artists and scholars are receiving allocations from the 2005 City of Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Fund, administered by the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council.

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY  $1500

Bainbridge Island Oral History Project - For personnel and equipment to conduct, record, and transcribe ten oral histories of Island residents.

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND JAPANESE

AMERICAN COMMUNITY  $2500

 Nidoto Nai Yoni Oral History Project - To collect and record on digital video the oral histories of B.I. Japanese Americans evacuated and incarcerated during WW II, for viewing at the new Pritchard Park Memorial. Photographer Joel Sackett will create 4 -20 photo portraits.

HELPLINE HOUSE  $950

Empty Bowls Project - In support of a project that addresses the issue of hunger. Professional artists work with 300 local students to make ceramic bowls and serve a simple meal, for which guests donate to the food bank.

ISLANDWOOD  $1000

The Community Sense of Place Poetry Series - Three free poetry writing and reading events in different locations, in which Island residents write about their relationship to Bainbridge Island.

SCIENCE FICTION WRITING COOPERATIVE

(Tamara Kaye Sellman)  $2000

Off the Ecliptic II: Further Stories of Imagination

To produce and publish a second anthology of competitively selected “speculative fiction” by Bainbridge writers. $2000

FIELD’S END, A WRITERS’ COMMUNITY

(Bainbridge Public Library)  $1000

Writers’ Roundtable at Field’s End - To continue the presentation of twelve free monthly Writers’ Roundtable forums at the Public Library, in which participants discuss writing with guest authors to improve their skills.

BAINBRIDGE PERFORMING ARTS  $2200

BPA Playwrights’ Festival - To support the production of two jury-selected one-act plays by Jeff Fraga and Sara Anne Scribner, presented April 7-9 at BPA. The Playwrights’ Festival follows a Field’s End playwriting workshop conducted last fall to encourage new and original work.

OVATION! MUSICAL THEATRE BAINBRIDGE  $1800

The Music Man - In support of Ovation!’s production of Meredith Willson’s musical, The Music Man, at the Bainbridge High School LGI July 15-31.

ISLAND THEATRE  $1650

Island Theatre Play Readings - To produce and present six free play readings at the Bainbridge Public Library and six free potluck play readings in private homes.

WEST SOUND CONTRADANCE COALITION  $1500

Bainbridge Island Contra Dances - To present a series of nine American folk contradances on Bainbridge Island with live music and a caller.

Island Roots: Filipino Americans on Bainbridge Island - For research and development of the third in a quartet of cultural history documentary films that explore how different cultures relate to and connect with the land and environment of Bainbridge Island.

Puppets on Parade - In support of a community puppet-making art experience (with a water wildlife theme),  June 21-July 4, with a performance experience at the 4th of July parade.

KORUM BISCHOFF  $1000

Visual Documentation of Bainbridge Island Music Community through Rock Posters. A visual documen-tation (posters) of 15-20 musicians and presenters from the Bainbridge music community, exhibited at Pegasus Coffee House in February, 2006.

PATTY ROGERS & JOHN WILLSON  $1411

Bookmarking, A Pairing of the Verbal and Visual -

To produce 7500 bookmarks that pair four mixed-media paintings by Rogers with four poems by Willson, to be given away at the February 2006 Arts Walk. Posters of the four collaborative poem/images will be created for display and two sets of the limited edition posters will be donated to local auctions benefiting the arts and humanities.

ISLAND SOUNDSCAPE PLAYERS $2225  

Soundscapes and Earth Tones—A Chamber Music Series - In support of three professional quality chamber music concerts based on music from around the world (Americas, Pacific Rim, Europe), November 2005, Feb 2006, May 2006, at Grace Episcopal Church.

BARBARA HUME   $577

Barbara Hume in Concert - In support of a concert with Barbara Hume (vocalist) and David Mesler (composer/pianist) performing jazz/classical treatments of songs based on poetry by cummings, Frost, Dickinson, Auden, Sandburg, Whitman, presented April 8 at the Bainbridge Commons.

BAINBRIDGE CHORALE  $1500

The Messiah - Two 2-hour performances of Handel’s Messiah by the Bainbridge Chorale, presented in December, with full chorus, the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, and four soloists, at a Bainbridge venue.

ISLAND MUSIC GUILD  $2350

Teen Band Concert Series - In support of twelve monthly concerts featuring Island teen musicians and bands at the new Island Music Guild Hall, coordinated and run by Island teens with support from IMG.

ALLEN STRANGE  $987

With a Little Help from My Friends—A Concert of Music by Allen Strange - A free concert presenting the contemporary, computer-based music of composer Allen Strange, this fall, at Island Music Guild, and aired on BIB.
