2004 ARTS & HUMANITIES FUND ALLOCATIONS
The following projects have been selected for funding for
the year 2004.
Bainbridge Arts and Crafts
Visual Art • $2,760
In support of an exhibition titled 'Fine Contemporary Craft"
from November 2004 to January 2005, featuring the best in contemporary
craft, including woodworking, furniture, ceramics, glass, jewelry,
metalworking and textiles, by local and regional artists.
Bainbridge Library
Multidisciplinary • $1,045
For "Moments in Time," a three-part series for seniors
combining writing, genealogical research, archival preservation
techniques, and artistic imagination. Participants, led by memoir-writing
instructor Marcia Rudoff and arts educator Mary Louise Ott, will
transform their memories into personal stories through composition
of a memory book incorporating words and images.
Bainbridge Chorale
Music • $1,500
To support the presentation of the major choral/orchestral work,
the Verdi Requiem, and the world premiere of Lectio by Donald Stewart
at the Chorale's spring concert in March 2004. This collaborative
effort, which included 250 singers and musicians, was performed
at Benaroya Hall and at the Bainbridge High School gym.
Bainbridge Island Historical Society
Humanities • $1,660
The Bainbridge Oral History Project will identify and record the
recollections of both present and former residents whose memories
and personal experiences can enhance our understanding of this community.
Bainbridge Island Historical Society
Humanities • $660
The Oral History Digital Conversion Project will transfer the information
on vinyl or video tapes to a digital medium, to preserve them and
to be able to present them using modern computer technology at the
new Museum facilities.
Bainbridge Island Parks and Recreation
Multidisciplinary • $2,500
To support the annual Outdoor Music and Art Festival held on the
first Sunday in August in conjunction with Arts Walk. Attended by
over 3,000, this community event brings local and national musical
performers to the stage in Waterfront Park. Local visual artists
will display their work at the Commons and in booths.
Bainbridge Performing Arts
Theater • $2,500
The Empowering Youth, Enlightening Society (E.Y.E.S.) program will
use playwriting and theater production to address the issue of teenage
alienation. The focus will be the needs of at-risk teens, resulting
in a dramatic event drawn from monologues about coping with the
troubling issues of adolescence.

Field's End
Literary Art • $1,513
To support a free monthly Writer's Roundtable at the Bainbridge
Library, a forum open to writers and community members. Goals are
to make Field's End Writers Community accessible to all, provide
an opportunity to learn from others, nurture a sense of community,
and serve the needs of writers.
Helpline House
Humanities • $1,200
The Empty Bowls Project provides a tool to educate the community
on how to fight the global problem of hunger. With artist Jenny
Anderson, children create ceramic bowls and serve a simple meal
of soup and bread. Guests choose a bowl and keep it as a reminder
that there are always empty bowls in the world and, in exchange
for a meal and a bowl, make a donation to Helpline food bank.
Imagine Bainbridge
Humanities • $1,300
For "Let's Talk: A Community Summit with Youth and Adults"
to be held October 17 at the Commons. Participants include the Power
of Hope organization, which provides opportunities for teen empowerment
through the arts. With a facilitator, two visual artists, a musician
and a poet, this free intergenerational learning program will create
a dialogue between youth and adults that will extend to future gatherings.
Island Music Guild
Music • $3,262
To obtain a sound system to support IMG house concerts, outdoor
concerts, and street dances, and to produce an average of one community
event per month throughout the year.
Island Theatre
Theater • $1,650
Six bimonthly readings of exceptional plays at the Library, and
six potluck readings in private homes, offered free to the public.
Wendy Jackson Hall & Kathe Fraga
Multidisciplinary • $1,000
Giant Puppets on Parade, a community art-making and performance
experience led by Wendy Jackson Hall and Kathe Fraga, will begin
with a puppet-building workshop for all ages on the theme of "Out
of This World: Visitors From Mars." The puppets will be displayed
at the street dance on July 3 and paraded in the 4th of July parade
for all to enjoy.
Marjorie Rubin & Robin Simons
Multidisciplinary • $2,000
"Queen Elizabeth's Strawberries and Other Plant Tales of Bainbridge
Island, a Story in Text and Pictures of the Plants that Shaped the
Island's Culture and History," is the collaborative project
of Marjorie Rubin, a visual artist, and writer Robin Simons. They
will create an exhibit with images and text that documents the Island's
demographic, botanical, and cultural history, and examine the ways
inhabitants have used plants.
Allen Strange
Music • $1,500
"Bainbridge Sketches," conceived as a programmatic tone
poem drawn from the mood and environment of four Island locales,
will be an original music composition for orchestra and computer-generated
soundtrack, presented in a free community concert and an outreach
program by the Bainbridge Youth Orchestra. The project is an example
of current trends in contemporary performance and computer applications.
Winslow Chamber Players
Music • $1,150
"Soundscapes and Seasons" will bring professional
quality chamber music to the community with a series of three concerts
based on the seasons: 'Colors of Fall," 'Wintertime,"
and 'Sounds of Spring," held at the Bainbridge Commons in February
and November 2004 and May 2005. Each concert reflects the season
in its chosen compositions, and includes a discussion of the works
by one of the musicians.
