ISLAND GATEWAY PROJECT

The Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council's Public Art Committee proposed to sponsor a consulting artist to work in collaboration with the City's Public Works Department, its engineering consultants, and a committee of community representatives on the design of an important street improvement project and on identifying or developing public art potential in a broader area which comprises the downtown core of the island community and offers an initial experience to ferry-riding visitors.

The intent of this collaboration was to introduce the perspective, vision, and creativity of a professional artist into the otherwise pragmatic activities of the engineering team developing final design of an important street improvement project and to add public art experience and inspiration to the committee's exploration of visual and symbolic enhancement possibilities for the street improvement project and immediately adjoining sections of the street and highway system.
